The Perfect Circle (2009), Website

➊ End each turn with a perfect circle which is larger than the previous one.

2013

Conditional Design Workbook

× Play with four players.
× Each player has a coloured pen: red, green, blue, or black.
× The players take clockwise turns lasting 30 seconds.
× Use a stopwatch.

➊ First turn:
Draw a filled-in circle in the center of the paper.

➋ Following turns:
Improve the circle's round shape by enlarging its borders.

➌ Stop when the circle is perfect.

Roel: I am fascinated by the fact that mathematical shapes can be found everywhere in nature but are hardly ever perfect. Each worker receives a colored marker to draw with and is asked to execute the simple but sometimes self contradicting rule. Each turn took exactly one minute and the rule was executed exactly 60 times.

Hatching (2009), Website

× Play with four players.
× Each player has a coloured pen: red, green, blue, or black.
× Each player places a dot on the sheet at an arbitrary position but not further than 10 cm from each other.
× Task to be performed every turn by each player.

Draw a straight line
➊ The line must connect two dots.

➋ The angle of the line must be within the following range: 0 to 45 degrees for the black lines, 45 to 90 degrees for the blue lines, 90 to 135 degrees for the red lines, 135 to 180 degrees for the green lines.

➌ Connect the line to an existing line if possible.

➍ Draw the shortest possible line from your starting point. If you enclose an area (a plane surrounded by lines) then hatch it with lines parallel to the line you enclosed the area with. The enclosed area may not contain unconnected dots or open ended lines.

Place a dot
The position of the dot is not further away than 10 cm from other dots and not inside the convex hull of all dots.

Conditional Design Workbook

× Play with four players.
× Each player has a coloured pen: red, green, blue, or black.
× The players take clockwise turns.

➊ First round, each player:
Arbitraily place a dot on the paper.
1.1: The dots may not be placed further than 10cm apart.

➋ Next turns:
Draw a line and place a dot.
2.1: The line must connect two dots.
2.2: The line's angle must obey the following range for each colour: 0 to 45° for black, 45° to 90° for blue, 90° to 135° for red, 135° to 180° for green.
2.3: If possible, connect the line to an exsisting one.
2.4: The line must always be as short as possible.
2.5: When you enclose an area (creating a surface surrounded by lines), hatch it parallel to the last drawn line.
2.5.1: The enclosed area may not contain unconnected dots or open-ended lines.

2.6: The dot may not be placed further than 10cm away from other dots.
2.7: The dot may not be placed inside the convex hull of all dots.

➌ Stop drawing when you have reached the edges of the paper.

Luna: The goal was to create as many hatched areas as possible. It was very difficult to formulate the precise rules although I had it very clear in my head.

× Play with four players.
× Each player has a coloured pen: red, green, blue, or black.
× The players take clockwise turns.

Changing the Rules (2008), Website

× Play with four players.
× Each player has a coloured pen: red, green, blue, or black.
× The players take clockwise turns.
× Each turn a player would first draw a line on the paper. Then, (s)he would give the next player an aditional drawing instruction.

Start the game without any rules. Each round one player had to define a new rule.

➊ Jonathan must draw a red line, attached to a blue line, under an angle of 30 degrees from the blue line, shorter than the blue line.

➋ Edo must draw a black line, under an angle precisely between the red line just drawn by Jonathan and the blue line which Jonathan's red line was attached to.

➌ Roel must draw a blue line that crosses the black line just drawn by Edo under an angle of 90 degrees. His blue line's length must be between the length of Edo's black line and Jonathan's red line.

➍ Luna must draw a green line that connects the ends of a red and a black line.
None of the lines may cross other lines, unless explicitly stated otherwise.

2009

Custom Rules (2009), Website

× Play with four players.
× Each player has a coloured pen: red, green, blue, or black.
× Each participant starts with 2 custom-rule-cards: 1x card type 1, 1x card type 2.
× The players take turns.

➊ Each turn a participant first draws one straight line:
1.1: None of the drawn lines may cross other lines, unless explicitly stated otherwise.
1.2: Try to draw lines that work well with the other lines, within the given constraints.
1.3: The participant must skip its turn if (s)he can't draw a line without breaking any of the custom rules.

➋ Then, only in the first two turns, (s)he must fill in a custom-rule-card and give it to the next participant:
2.1: Combine parts of sentences together, by underlining them, to create a custom rule.
2.2: Try to make a meaningfull rule that goes well together with the other custom rules.

➌ In general, try to cooperate to create the most beautifull drawing.

Conditional Design Workbook

× Play with four players.
× Each player has a coloured pen: red, green, blue, or black.
× The players take clockwise turns.

➊ First round, each player:
Draw one straight line with a maximum length of 10cm near the center of the paper.

➋ Following round, each player:
Choose one sentence from both cards by underlining one of the options in brackets [see 2.1].

➌ Next turns:
Draw a straight line following the two rules you have chosen.
3.1. Only draw a line when it does not conflict with the two rules you have chosen.
3.2. Do not cross other lines unless explicitly stated otherwise.

➍ Stop drawing when you have reached the edges of the paper.

The Beach (2009), Website

➊ Each turn, find the most empty space on the paper and place a dot in the middle of it.

2013

Conditional Design Workbook

× Play with four players.
× Each player has a coloured pen: red, green, blue, or black.
× The players take clockwise turns.

➊ First turn:
Place a dot.
➋ Following turns:
Place a dot in the center of the largest empty space.
➌ Stop drawing when you think the beach is crowded.

Roel: "entering the beach on a sunny day you will look for an empty place and position yourself right in the middle". — A fascinating form of self organization.

Knots (2009), Website

➊ Elongate your line on both sides by looping it over and under a line of another color.

➋ You may not loop your own line or the line you looped in your last turn.

➌ If you have no options left on one of the sides, that side is dead.

➍ When both sides are dead, you may place a new line.

2011

In de Knoop (2011), Website

➊ First step:
The first player draws a line.
The other players draw a line that goes over and under the last drawn line.

➋ In turns:
The player elongates his/her line on both ends. The elongations have to go over and under a line of another player and may not go over the line of the same color twice in a row.
When a line can no longer be elongated, it is considered dead for the rest of the game. When both ends of a line have died, the player may place a new line.

2013

Conditional Design Workbook

➊ First round, first player:
Draw a line (of between 5–10cm) anywhere on the paper.

➋ First round, remaining 3 players:
Draw a line by looping it over and under the line of another colour.

➌ Following turns:
Elongate your line on both ends by looping it over and under a line of another colour.
3.1: You may not loop your own line.
3.2: You may not loop a line from a previous turn.
3.3: When no options are left on one of the ends, that end is dead.
3.4: When both ends are dead, you may start with a new line.

➍ Stop drawing when you are fully entangled.

Adapting conditions from Knots (2013), Workbook

Reflections:
Despite all of us agreeing that we understood the conditions we had quite a bit of trouble with the excursion. Additionally, we were debating about who understands their logic 'correctly.' Unconscious, everyone tries to be the leader to rectify another's 'wrong doings', expect Johnson, as ususal he is in his own world.

Though, we did this excercise online, we were already sitting in formation respectively. This helps to remove confusion when as to whose turn is next.

Comments that surfaced:
"How long is 5-10cm? Our screen size already different."
"Can we please redo its so confusing?"

Questions that surfaced:
How do I better define the length of a knot?
